The passage of the SARA Title III: Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act of 1986 mandates that facilities which produce, utilize and/or store certain hazardous materials must report these chemicals to State environmental authorities. This Act has also intensified local governmental authorities' and the community's concern and interest about these facilities.
It encourages these facilities to initiate community awareness about the chemicals they use and to work with local governments, emergency response organizations, and neighborhood groups in developing emergency plans in the event of a hazardous materials incidents at these facilities.

Local Emergency Plannning Committee
Mission:
The Local Emergency Planning Committee serving Wicomico County shall plan for those areas relating to a safe storage, transportation, and utilization of hazardous materials as they apply to public safety. L.E.P.C. activities shall emphasize but are not limited to:
identification of potential hazards within Wicomico County
mitigation of hazards when feasible
identification of potential response resources
prepare for a timely response to an accident or event
protection and recovery of life, property, and the environment from the spill or release of hazardous materials
prepare written emergency plans
respond to information requests from the public

local hospitals local governments state officials
American Red Cross private industry planning and zoning
citizen groups
